AI change is happening and scientific insight is needed
AI is classified as a disruptive technology. AI is a concept which is becoming the next big disruptor to the global economy and also the biggest innovation driver after the industrial revolution. Ai is classified as a disruptive technology within a meaning – it will greatly disrupt the way businesses conduct their operations and how people work.
But, what does it exactly mean? What should businesses expect? And how far is the business ecosystem from this futuristic dream?
Let us analyze some facts about the state of AI. In railways, the term ‘disruptive’ refers to the potential impact they can have on existing value chains. In this context, disruptive technologies refer to technologies that either completely replace an existing process or significantly reduce its cycle time and thus improve the overall productivity of the system. Such technologies are referred to as disruptive as they are capable of drastically changing both the demand and supply side of the economy.
Automation is one such technology that has seen an increased adoption in the Railways over the past decades. Under automation projects on the rail network, tools have replaced manpower to perform a number of tasks. Tools such as robots, mechanical handling devices, computer controlled machines etc. are now used to replace human labour to perform tasks such as inspection, maintenance, welding, painting and cleaning etc. These automated systems have replaced some of the dangerous work performed by human beings and improved production efficiency.
In 2021 the European Union (EU) Commission announced their strategic initiative on AI as a promising new business opportunity for Europe. AI can contribute to economic growth and prosperity by sprinkling intelligence across all sectors of the economy. This innovation has the potential to create many jobs within the economy and to improve transparency of the public administration and services in many different ways. The Commission addressed the creation of a single European market for artificial intelligence and it highlighted the strong potential for European Union member states to work together on research, development and innovation in this area, to create value for businesses and ultimately to boost growth and employment.
Why this society is needed?
There’s a significant research gap in AI business applications. AI solutions are being developed by computer scientists and developers. These innovative solutions are mostly deployed without proper scientific testing and rigorous analysis from the perspective of business sciences. This has led the business society into many unknowns regarding the actual usefulness of the AI solutions. There’s a vast array of AI solutions developed, which are of great need of scientific testing and validation through proper use cases and experiments. When scientifically tested, the AI solutions could demonstrate their effectiveness over the traditional business methods, and consequently raise societal trust towards such solutions.
While computer scientists are not trained for business research measures, likewise the business scientists are generally lack of expertise in artificial intelligence and related enabling technologies. Our society targets this gap, by means of scientific collaboration, which enables to achieve a new qualitative understanding and expertise of the two disciplines – AI and business.
Our mission
The Artificial Intelligence and Business Society is a research community dedicated to the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and business. The society aims to increase public understanding of artificial intelligence within the business domain, improve the teaching and training of AI business practitioners, and provide guidance for research planners and funders concerning the importance and potential of current AI developments and future directions.
Our format
Our main activity is networking and collaborating on scientific or practical goals. Our collaboration is shaped in a form of a society. In other words, this society is a research community joined by the afore mentioned goals. This is a nonprofit society without a dedicated legal body. We act through our members’ corresponding organizations and affiliations.
Our activities
The Society’s main aim is to build connections, involving both the academia and industry experts. Scientific events are planned twice a year, including an annual scientific conference. The network is also intended to foster scientific collaboration by connecting researchers for co-authoring publications and pursuing other academic endeavors. Additionally we seek to enable forming consortiums, such as for grants and projects. Our activities take place mainly online.
